The Point Robinson Lighthouse is a great getaway that is close to Seattle yet on the quiet, rural island of Maury Island, connected to Vashon Island. In addition to views, beach walks, and history, the Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters are available to rent and enjoy the waterfront experience more fully.

After taking one of the two public ferries to Vashon Island (connecting from the south or north ends to the mainland), a casual ride through forested roads takes you around to the artificial land bridge that now connects to Maury Island. The setting becomes a bit more off the beaten path down side roads until opening up into Vashon-Maury Island Park. At road’s end is Point Robinson Lighthouse.

Depending upon when you arrive, there is a small gift shop that may be open with congenial volunteers. There is also a locally famous ex-Coast Guard captain available to give friendly tours and answer questions at the top of the lighthouse. Plenty of history about the succession of buildings, services, and lighthouse keepers at the property for over 140 years. The lower level of the lighthouse has a small museum for exploring and further learning.

The lighthouse keeper’s residence has the feel of an old house, yet is very well maintained and comfortable. Modern amenities, kitchen, and bathroom make it an easy vacation. The home has a formal dining room, living room, 3 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. Most importantly, there is the beachside covered porch with rocking chairs, overlooking Puget Sound to the east, north, and south towards the mainland. Hanging out there, while occasionally waving to a passerby, was the best part!
