The Ebey’s Prairie Trail is a historic and picturesque trail that starts at inland bucolic farm land and ends at a beautiful bluff overlooking Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.
For a solid dose of local history, start at the Sunnyside Cemetery. This includes the graves of many early, famous Whidbey Island settlers. The cemetery also has one of the few remaining pioneer blockhouses, at the David Blockhouse. These blockhouses were created as miniature forts to protect against potential (and occasionally real) marauding local Native American tribes. You can even enter the blockhouse.
From there, go west toward Jacob Ebey House. This historic home is sometimes open with history displays and knowledgeable local docents inside.
Beyond that, the trail extends through historic and soil-rich farm land, overlooking some of the famous agricultural views within Ebey’s Landing National Historic Reserve.
The trail’s western end intersects the Ebey’s Bluff Trail, which is a loop that goes up along a view-full bluff, around Perego’s Lagoon, and back along the Puget Sound beach to Ebey’s Landing State Park. The loop can be completed to Ebey’s Prairie Trail for a full out and back experience. Highly recommended!
