After resting up at the romantic Swan Room at Otters Pond Bed and Breakfast, we ventured back toward Orcas Island’s main town of Eastsound to hike around Madrona Point. Madrona Point is owned by the Lummi Indian Nation; it is spectacularly beautiful sacred ground, with gentle paths that hug the coastline through a canopy of my favorite tree in the world: the madrona. Small coves harbor gnarled driftwood and great places to soak up sun or have a picnic. During the trip we also hiked around the perimeter of Mountain Lake in Moran State Park, explored Eastsound on foot, wandered over to the Doe Bay area, and found another true hidden jewel of the island: The Lambiel Museum. To get into the museum, you call Leo Lambiel and see if he is available to give a tour. The museum is his entire home – literally. The tour includes artwork in his bedroom, bathrooms, and even closets, plus we got a tour of his personal whimsical woodworking and construction projects that have been ongoing for years. We had a truly great time with Leo and his 30 year collection.
