Smith Rock State Park is a terrific destination for a 5 mile loop hike among beautiful rock formations along the Crooked River, all a short trip north of Bend, Oregon. Misery Ridge Trail goes in a steep switchback upwards, and unofficial trails to the very top beckon as well. Light and shadows change throughout the day as rock climbers challenge themselves on the steep cliffs. Views range from up close and personal at river’s edge, and then out to wide panoramas extending to mountain peaks on the horizon.
